Skill Laboratory
The Institute has a well-equipped and dedicated Skills Laboratory designed to provide students with a safe, structured and supportive environment for learning and practising essential clinical and procedural skills before performing them on patients.
The Skills Laboratory supports the principles of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) by providing opportunities for hands-on, experiential and competency-based learning. Students are trained through demonstrations, supervised practice, simulation and structured skills assessment.
The Skills Laboratory facilitates training in various basic clinical and procedural skills, including, as applicable:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and resuscitation skills
- Basic clinical examination skills
- History taking and communication skills
- Vital signs assessment
- Injection and medication administration techniques
- Intravenous access and fluid administration
- Basic wound care and dressing
- Suturing and basic procedural skills
- Urinary catheterisation and other essential procedures
- Maternal and child health-related skills
- Neonatal care and resuscitation skills
- Other discipline-specific clinical and procedural competencies
Training is conducted using skill stations, mannequins, task trainers and other simulation-based learning resources, wherever appropriate. Students are provided repeated opportunities to practise skills under faculty supervision, with emphasis on correct technique, patient safety, communication and professionalism.
The Skills Laboratory is also utilised for formative assessment, competency-based assessment and structured assessments such as OSCE/OSPE, wherever applicable.
The Institute encourages regular utilisation of the Skills Laboratory as an integral component of undergraduate medical education and strives to ensure that students acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies required for safe and effective clinical practice.
Clinical Trials Day Observes every year on May 20, 2022, by raising clinical trial awareness and honoring clinical research professionals across the globe.
