INTRODUCTION

  • The department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology is located at the 4th floor of the Academic Block of the Kiran Medical College, Surat. The department is engaged in teaching medical students by providing hands-on experience and modern teaching modalities. It is well equipped with models, specimens and charts to provide best learning experience to students and enhance their creativity. Apart from this, the department provides a favorable environment for scientific research. The department dedicated caters medico legal services for the community. 
  • Our department motto is “Justice to Innocent Soul”. Forensic Medicine department mainly emphasize on ethical academic activities and Medico legal guidance to UG, PG students, Alumni members, Medical Officers, Police, and Advocates etc.

VISION

  1. To gain excellence and integrity in Forensic Medicine by balancing the emphasis on teaching, research and medico legal services.
  2. To develop a model of excellence in the field of forensic medicine, forensic pathology and allied branches of forensic sciences.

GOALS

  1. Development of Ethical and Humanistic attitude in INDIAN MEDICAL GRADUATES (IMG) by emphasizing importance of Ethics and Professionalism in medical practice. 
  2. To make effort for upgradation of knowledge and skill in Forensic Medicine subject. 
  3. Mainly focusing on affective domain of undergraduate student on bioethical aspect of medical practice.
  4. Identify and define the existing as well as future Medico-legal problems as they emerge in the community and work to resolve such problems by planning, implementing, evaluating and modulating Medico-legal services.
  5. To make teaching and learning more pleasant, effective & interesting by using different techniques like Moot-Court and showing Cinema Clips etc.
  6. To generate quality research in the subject.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, MBBS student will be:

  1. Able to perform medico legal post-mortem/autopsy,
  2. Appreciate and interpret findings and results of other relevant investigations for logical conclusion and framing the opinion on cause, manner and time since death.
  3. Able to diagnose and manage the cases of common poisoning and can carry out medico legal duties
  4. Able to identify the medico legal cases, carry out medical examination in such cases and prepare medico legal report as per the law of the land.
  5. Aware of code of ethics, duties and rights of medical practitioner, duties towards patients and community, punishment on violation of code of ethics, various forms of medical negligence, duties towards his professional colleagues.
  6. Aware regarding recent amendments in laws and its application in the practice of medicine.

Marks of Journal and logbook to be given just before preliminary exam, so students have to complete logbook and journal for all terms.

2. Exam pattern of theory, practical and formative assessment is as follows

  • In 2nd Professional year, there will be 1 internal exam and 1 Formative Assessment, and in 3rd Professional year Part-I there will be 1 internal exam and 1 will be pre-university examination
  • Formative assessment of theory is of MCQ (25 MCQ in set) based and time for it is 25 minutes and Formative assessment of practical is Certificate writing (10 marks), Pm report writing (10 marks) and Spotting (30 marks) 10 spot are there and each carry 3 marks. Time duration for each exercise is as per university examination
  • Pattern, Marks & Time duration of Theory and Practical of all exams are shows in following table as Table- A and Table-B respectively as follows

SCOPE OF WORK

  • The department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology conducting collaborative research work with departments like emergency medicine, general medicine, OBGY, Paediatrics, surgery and psychiatry. The department will help to medical professionals of various clinical departments in examination and certification in the medico-legal cases like injury examination, age estimation, sexual assault cases, etc. In the mortuary complex, cold-storage facility is available to preserve the dead body. The department will also have a vision to develop a clinical forensic medicine unit.

FACILITIES FOR TEACHING& LEARNING

  • The department is equipped with modern amenities, with well-planned furnished faculty rooms, office, computers, laptop, internet facility, research room, an outstanding organized museum, full time operational staff library and huge student laboratory in association with the department of pathology, a specious demo room with projector, LCD. The department has a separate cold storage with required cold chamber.
  • The department has got a vast collection of bones, which help the student to learn with ease. The department has got a variety of wet specimens, weapons, poisons, charts, models etc which are required for curriculum. Research laboratory is equipped with binocular microscopes, anthropometry set etc for students.
